BBQ Socials

JEWSE doesn't just build quirky contraptions; we also know how to have fun. We have multiple rooftop BBQs every semester complete with delicious food, good friends, and a beautiful view of Berkeley and the San Francisco Bay. With the return of the Golden Bears to the newly rebuilt Memorial Stadium, we hope to continue our tradition of gameday BBQs.

Magen David

JEWSE's Rube Goldberg machine had an 18 inch rotating Star of David, but we knew we could do better, so in spring of 2012 we built a 6-foot, spinning, light-up, hava-nagila-playing Star of David.

Community Service

In 2011 our members began periodic visits to the Oakland Hebrew Day School and constructed Lego Robots with the students. We hope to inspire these students to become future Jews in Engineering.

JEWSE Sukkah

In October 2011, JEWSE built a wooden sukkah on campus. Whether to shake the lulav and etrog, attend a potluck dinner, or just hang out, the sukkah was a meeting place for ours members, friends, and visitors.

A sukkah is a temporary hut, built by Jews for the 8-day-long autumn holiday of Sukkot. The sukkah reminds us of the biblical exodus from Egypt, and the huts that the Jews lived in as they journeyed through the desert to the land of Israel. We build the sukkah outside, give it a roof of leaves, and decorate it. It is customary to eat and entertain guests in the sukkah.

Rube Goldberg Machine

JEWSE participated in Berkeley's annual Rube Goldberg competition in the Spring of 2011, and won first place! Our submission was titled and themed "Four Seasons."

A Rube Goldberg machine (named after Jewish American cartoonist and inventor Rube Goldberg) is a deliberately complex machine designed to complete a simple task though a chain reaction of many steps. The task for the 2011 Berkeley competition was to water a plant.
